Iris in May: features of care

Iris, cockerel or iris - this is probably the only plant that does not want to be picked. Charming and unpretentious, they look great in flowerbeds, perfectly ennoble fences and benches, grow with pleasure on any soil and are ready to delight everyone passing with their colorful shades. But this does not mean that such beauty does not need care, which depends on what kind of flower became the gardener's choice.

Types of irises and their features

There are too many types of cockerels to begin listing them. In principle, for a gardener to begin with should be enough information that there are rhizomatous and bulbous varieties. Few people know about this, because, basically, the plots are decorated only with the first look.

Rhizome irises divide into unbordered and bearded varieties. Such flowers have received the name for shaggy fibers on a surface of petals. The different heights of cockerels allows them to be classified into many subspecies, but, by and large, it is interesting only to scientists or advanced breeders.

Bulb irises distributed much less, and they were divided into only three types:

  • net (iridodictium);
  • iris pearl (Juno);
  • Dutch (Xifium).

What does rhizomatous iris need in May?

Iris has become popular due to its unpretentiousness. He will not require special care, however, he will respond to a little care with more lush flowering.

REFERENCE. The only thing that does not like the iris - an excess of water, which is why in the wet areas should provide a drainage system. This is especially important in May, when warm weather can quickly be replaced by thunderstorms or rain.

Hand weeding (not to damage the roots) and surface loosening will be useful rather to give care to the bushes than for their development.

Care for flowering plants

Iris blooms in May and June. At this time, you can feed him a little, please with weeding. In a dry month, plants should be watered occasionally (when the soil is completely dry).

Withered flowers are best removed. So the type of plant will be prettier, and the disease will not cling.

Transplant features

From my own experience I know: transplanting irises is so simple that even an inexperienced amateur will cope with it. Just need to dig up the root, shove it in a new hole, cover it with earth and wait.

The distance between plants should not be less than 40-50 centimeters. Only a year later the iris will grow, and too close proximity will prevent it from developing.

Although it is believed that replanting a flower is better in August, but in practice, the iris can be moved at any time. Even when I simply (with bitterness in my heart) threw out the excess roots in a hole of grass, the next year new flowers appeared there. And they felt no worse than carefully weeded copies.

REFERENCE. It is better to dilute the “heavy” soil with sand or peat, to a heavily depleted soil - add a little fertilizer with a minimum of nitrogen. The acidic soil is enriched with ash.

What does a bulbous iris need in May

Bulb varieties will require a more attentive relationship for a comfortable existence. They love the sun, water and loose soil. Therefore, in the hot May, it is desirable for them to provide additional watering. And it is better to do this in the evenings, making sure that the water does not fall on the flowers themselves.

Withered flowers are recommended to be removed immediately. A light loosening will allow the plant to feel the care of the owner, which is beneficial for flowering.

Preparing for digging

Bulbs should be dug within a month after flowering.. It is easy to determine the readiness to be removed from the ground by the leaves: as soon as they dry about half the length, you can safely take up a shovel.

IMPORTANT! The main thing is to do it before the rains, otherwise the onions may rot.

The excavated material is treated with a weak solution of potassium permanganate, dried and placed in a dry ventilated room..

ATTENTION! Onion irises are planted in mid-September (for central Russia); in the southern regions, the planting time can be extended by a month.

To protect against frost, the bed is recommended to wrap with covering material. In this case, grateful for the care of the plants will delight the gardener with early shoots.

If you pay attention to the above recommendations, an unpretentious iris will become a real helper for anyone who is not ready to be killed above a flower bed day and night. And the variety of its shades will make the flowerbed a beautiful and amazing place.
