Why there are no chandeliers in American homes

The Americans, in our opinion, have many oddities in everyday life that they consider normal, but it seems to us that this is complete nonsense and living so uncomfortable. The lack of ceiling lighting in most rooms is one of these oddities. If we go into the living room to any of the native inhabitants, it will be problematic to see the familiar chandelier there or at least spotlights. But to observe all kinds of light bulbs, sconces, floor lamps and many candles - it’s always welcome. Where did the tradition of not installing ceiling lights come from and how Americans compensate for the lack of light, I will tell in the article.

Overhead Light - Luxury!

One of the reasons why Americans do not use chandeliers in the interior is the desire to minimize the cost of housing. Many developers, trying to increase sales of constructed residential apartments and houses, completely refuse to hold a network on the ceiling to install a chandelier. If a person decides to nevertheless make overhead lighting in his apartment, he will have to seriously fork out a professional electrician. He will be able to install the necessary wires and cables, without destroying half of the house. Since the ceilings of American homes are usually heated, all work must be done exclusively by a professional.

Important! In addition, the United States has established rather high tariffs for utilities, so many are trying to save more on this.

Rational Americans felt that they would be able to cope with the darkness of other light sources:

  • sconce;
  • floor lamps;
  • table lamps;
  • a large number of wax candles and others.

A lot of light sources in one room is a feature of any American interior. This type of lighting even entered the design textbooks, as original and interesting for use in other countries.

How to live without a chandelier?

In fact, chandeliers are present in the homes of the indigenous people of the country. They are usually hung in the dining room, above the dining table, and in the kitchen so that cooking is convenient.

There is usually no chandelier in the living room, and there is a good reason for that. Americans believe that there is no need for an upper light source in this room. Family members watch TV in the living room or read books, and spotlight is enough for this.

Residents of the United States feel absolutely comfortable, lighting hundreds of candles every night and being content with a faint flicker. For the Russian man, this option is not suitable. This, of course, is good for a romantic meeting with a loved one and creates a special aura in the room, but is not suitable for spending time in the evening after a hard day's work.

Important! In prosperous houses and detached buildings, residents can choose any lighting method to their liking. You can also warn the developer of the apartment building that a chandelier is planned. But this whim will have to pay a lot of money.

Americans are accustomed to this way of life and do not pay attention to the inconvenience. But in their home appliance stores, lamps and fixtures are bought up, like hot cakes. And the choice here is colossal, for every taste and budget.

Many Russians who have moved to another continent are surprised at such "wrong" habits of arranging apartments. For most Russians, a chandelier is not only a way of lighting a room, but also a matter of pride. During the repair, the most expensive and beautiful one is selected. Therefore, we, Russians, Americans in this matter will never understand.
