Which laminate is better, with or without chamfer

To date, the laminate has largely replaced the natural plank coating. It is cheaper, more durable, easier to install. However, one of the main goals of the laminate is imitation of natural wood. To this end, a bevel is applied to the lamellas. In plank coating, it has practical value, and in a laminate only aesthetic. However, this aesthetic addition affects the overall characteristics of the laminate. We will figure out how much this influence is, and which laminate is better to choose, with or without chamfer.

What is a bevel laminate

A chamfer is a chamfered edge of wood. Initially, it was applied only to natural boards and had practical value. It helped to make less visible cracks that eventually appeared between the parquet boards as a result of the drying of the tree.

Further, this element was also made on the laminate. There is a laminate with a two-sided chamfer when the edges are beveled only along the length of the lamella; and with four-sided, when all the edges are beveled around the perimeter.

Varieties of chamfers on the laminate

The chamfer on the laminate can be different, since the edges are not mowed the same way. It depends on the model, and the way of education affects the future appearance. This element can be of several types:

  1. Direct. In this case, mowing is done at an angle of 45 °.
  2. Curly. In this case, the cut is rounded and does not form sharp edges.

Depending on the type of cut, at the junction of the lamellae, recesses different in appearance are formed. They also come in two types:

  • V-shaped. A recess of this shape is formed with a direct cut.
  • U-shaped are formed with a curly cut. Such recesses look like grooves with soft edges. This species is more common than the first.

Type does not have much practical value, however, the type of its formation matters. There are two ways:

  • rolling;
  • milling.

In the first case, the edge of the board is compressed. Thus, the edge remains protected from moisture and does not lose wear resistance. In the second case, the final processing is important. So, after milling, the board can be painted or laminated. Of course, a laminated version is preferable.

Which is better, laminate with or without chamfer

With a view of the bevels sorted out. Now you can choose the best option from models with this element. Now compare this view with a conventional laminate without a cut.

Compare water resistance

As you know, a laminate does not like water at all. But does a chamfer affect the level of water resistance? To some extent, yes.

It is worth noting here that in places of high humidity, water can accumulate in the recesses and, over time, provoke destructive processes. The quality of the laminate and the cut itself also plays a role here. If it is simply stained or not processed at all, then the moisture will become destructive. If it is laminated, you should not be afraid.

On a note! Laminated laminate is not afraid of moisture.

In general, the laminate is not at all advised to lay in places of high humidity.

Wear resistance

Another important factor that affects the durability of the laminate.

A chamfer can affect wear resistance only if it is made using the wrong technology or is on a cheap laminate. In general, the corners are beveled only on lamellas of at least 8 mm, and most often on boards of 10-12 mm. In this case, the depth of the cut does not affect the wear resistance, because its depth is insignificant in relation to the total thickness of the laminate.

It is worth noting! Rolled chamfer will be more durable. Due to the fact that it is formed by pressing, the edge becomes more dense.

Difficulty in care

Many are afraid that dirt will clog into the grooves. This statement holds, however, it is worth considering this issue from different angles.

Trash can really clog into recesses. Especially this often happens in the kitchen and in the hallway. And if small particles of garbage can be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner, then the fine dirt is eaten up quite tightly, and it is quite difficult to clean it from there.

On a note! In the kitchen and in the hallway, it is better to avoid laying the laminate with a chamfer.

To avoid problems in cleaning laminate with beveled edges:

  • lay it in places of less pollution: a bedroom or a living room;
  • vacuum the surface regularly;
  • after wet cleaning, it is advisable to walk with a dry rag or vacuum the surface to avoid accumulation of liquid in the recesses, which attracts dirt;
  • choose expensive and high-quality options in which the cut is processed with special tools.

Also, do not sweep the surface of such a laminate; use a vacuum cleaner.

Styling issues

The styling technology does not change in any way from the presence of this element. However, there is a pleasant plus: it allows you to visually smooth out small irregularities in the floor (up to 2 mm). Also, when the boards diverge due to the increased load, the gaps between the laminate will not be so noticeable.

What laminate flooring to buy

Based on the analysis, we conclude that the presence of a chamfer does not significantly affect the operational properties of the laminate. It is intended only for decorative purposes.

On a note! The main purpose of the chamfer is to make the laminate more like a natural wood.

In this case, be guided mainly by taste preferences, as well as the style of the room.
