The thickness of the floorboard

Reliability, attractive appearance and comfort of use of floor coverings are the determining criteria when choosing this or that material. Parquet board has such advantages. In the recent Soviet times, parquet was classified as a prestigious type of coating. With proper surface care, such a floor can last 40-50 years, or even more. Timely surface treatment allows you to save the pattern and structure of the tree, when using more than half a century.

Types of floorboards and their thickness

Modern material is significantly different from the same small strips used in the last century, the installation of which was quite painstaking work. The parameters of the boards have changed and have the following meanings:

  • width from 14 to 20 cm;
  • length from 1.8 to 2.5 m;
  • thickness from 0.7 to 2.5 cm.

As in previous times, the material is distinguished by its tree species, whether it be pine, ash or oak. The latter has increased strength and durability. Modern technologies allow you to apply various methods in the manufacture of flooring. Depending on this, finishing products are divided into two categories.

Massive parquet board

It is easy to understand by name that we are talking about the whole material of the product. It is in this category that parquet strips are used, which have been used since Soviet times and until now the material continues to be popular. This is due to the low cost of workpieces that can be sold in raw form: for grinding the surface of the floor.

The thickness of such a material varies from 1.5 to 5 cm, but the main demand is for slats with a height of about 2 cm. It is convenient to lay them on the logs laid out with a step that corresponds to the width of the created picture. The sizes of such boards differ from the modern parquet boards, because they have parameters close to Soviet standards. As a raw material, in the manufacture of bulk material, hardwood is used.

REFERENCE! The indisputable advantage of a parquet floor from small planks is the ease of repair in case of damage to a plot of any size. Having stocks of stock from the array, the destroyed areas are easily restored.

A variety of massive parquet is a combination of two types of wood: the top - the desired valuable material and the bottom - waterproof plywood, which performs the function of the base. The fibers of this base provide strength as well as product stability. The thickness of the tree species varies from 6 mm, and the used plywood sheet - from 10 mm. The use of a coating, which is called an engineering parquet board, will allow, at a low height of the panels, to provide the required strength indicators.

Parquet sandwich

As an alternative to a massive coating, in the middle of the last century a three-layer construction of a finishing material was created. The feature of the product is that the fibers of the glued layers are arranged perpendicular to each other, thereby increasing the strength and durability of such panels.

The error in changing the linear dimensions of the finishing material with sudden changes in temperature and humidity is minimized. Changing the directions of the fibers reduces the pressure on the supports and dampens the coating under loads. The top layer made of wood species resembles an array in structure and has a finish. The different direction of the fibers of each of the layers, allows for the height of the boards from 13 to 20 mm to achieve the strength of massive material with a thickness of 40-50 mm, which are made to order.

REFERENCE! The structure of the three-layer parquet, with a smaller thickness of the finishing material, allows to achieve high elasticity and lightens the load on the supporting floor structure.

Such a coating is made in the form of panels with locking locks on the side surfaces.

What affects the thickness of the floorboard

When choosing panels, a lot of attention is paid to color, ornament, as well as ease of installation along the length and width of the material. An important criterion for the selection of finishing material, affecting the service life of the coating, is the thickness. The quantity of possible cycles of surface grinding during operation depends on the same indicator.

For example, when grinding floors, a 1 mm layer is removed. The height of the upper layer of parquet panels is 7 mm, and this processing can be performed only 6 times. The looping of the floor from the array is performed to a depth of not more than 30% of the size of the planks. With a total value of this parameter less than 10 mm, grinding is not recommended. In addition, the thickness affects the rigidity and thermal conductivity of the coating. The higher the height of the product, the warmer the floor will be.

IMPORTANT! When processing with a looping machine, the appearance of the finishing material improves, but at the same time it loses its strength.

The cost of parquet planks made from solid wood directly depends on the thickness of the product. In sandwich panels, the determining criterion for price will be the quality and manufacturability of the coating.

How thick to choose a parquet board depending on the room

For residential premises, material of small height 13-16 mm is used, since the loads are small and the requirements for strength are small. In rooms equipped with underfloor heating, boards with minimal thickness are used. This is due to the low thermal conductivity of the wood coating.

ATTENTION! If there are other types of coatings in the apartment, the size of the finishing material is selected so that when joining (say, with tiles), the height difference is minimal!

With an increased load on the floor, for example, in the hallway or office, lay a parquet board, 16-20 mm thick. When installing the floor in public places, use products with a height of more than 20 mm.

If the laying of the finishing material is carried out on logs, then the thickness of the board should be at least 20 mm for the rigidity of the created coating.

Taking into account the features of the choice of flooring, select the desired color and pattern of the product. Then cover the floor with the board and enjoy the result.
