Do I need to prime the floor before laying the tiles

Tile is one of the most popular materials for decorating walls and floors in rooms such as a bathroom and kitchen. In order for such a coating to last as long as possible, it is worth strictly adhering to the laying technology.

Primer properties

The primer is a special solution that is applied to the surface, which will subsequently be covered with tiles. The main reasons why this composition is applied are as follows:

  • It improves adhesion between the surface and the ceramic tiles.
  • It contributes to a better placement of subsequent bonding layers.
  • It inhibits the development of fungus and mold.
  • The compounds used for processing are capable of exerting a moisture repellent effect.

As can be seen from the above properties, it is the priming of the surface that can provide a longer service life of the tile. That is, the tile will not lag behind the walls and floor. Moreover, under its surface, in possible voids, fungus and mold will not develop.

At the moment, construction stores are ready to provide various primers, which are divided into:

  • Primers for surfaces subject to intense moisture. These formulations are marked differently.
  • Deep penetration compounds. They differ in that they penetrate intensively and deeply into the floor or wall on which they are applied. But at the same time, the liquid composition does not clog the surface pores. Due to this property of the primer, to leave the porous structure of the floor or wall, their adhesive properties do not deteriorate.
  • Universal primers are designed for indoor use.
  • Special purpose mixtures must be used strictly in accordance with the recommendations indicated on the package.
  • Absorbing primers - apply on concrete, plaster, etc.
  • Non-absorbing - applied to metal, plastic, and painted floors or walls.

Before applying the primer mixture, it is imperative to carry out a preliminary treatment, which includes the removal of debris, dust and further degreasing.

IMPORTANT. It is necessary that the floors or walls have additional ribbing. To do this, remove a layer of paint or other coating from it and apply a notch with a chisel and hammer.

REFERENCE. Brick surfaces are primed twice.

Do I need to prime the floor before laying the tiles

The tile floor must be primed. Applying such a composition will allow you to get a film on the surface, which subsequently protects against microorganisms, and gives additional strength to the tiled coating. In addition, if you do not treat the surface before laying with the tile, then the rough surface on which the adhesive composition is applied will absorb most of it. And this will reduce the life of the tile and will contribute to its falling off.

REFERENCE. For the floor, most often choose an alkyd primer or acrylic. Do not choose the primer on the label of which is written - apply a second coat. It is not suitable for laying tiles.
