Laying tiles on the floor with herringbone

Ceramic tiles are widely used for decorating the room. Previously, the main finding of such material was a bathroom. Now there are many options for laying granite, suitable for almost every room. In this article, we will examine in more detail the option of laying a herringbone tile.

This method of laying is usually chosen for a ceramic coating of rectangular shape with an imitation of a wood pattern. In this option, the finished result will look whiter aesthetically. This installation method is suitable for rooms where it is necessary to expand the space and smooth out uneven corners.

Advice! In order to maximize the room, choose a narrow tile. Of course, time for its installation will take enough. But the result will exceed all expectations. Also, in order to, on the contrary, narrow the space, or just to fill a large area with such a pattern, choose a larger material.

Designers often use two contrasting shades of material. Such a technique can revive even the gray-black interior and will look very bright and stylish.

The laying rules themselves are very simple. The tile is joined with the narrow side to the wider side, thus forming angles of 90 degrees. Next, we will consider the installation technique step by step. The same technique will be used for laying a contrast view, only instead of one fragment two fragments are joined at once with the narrow side.

The main difficulty in installing tiles in this way is to measure right angles and lay the material so that the seams do not open. In order to prevent mistakes, you need to make a preliminary markup. With it, you can not only imagine how the Christmas tree pattern will look in your room, but also protect yourself from unnecessary fit of the tile in size, and you can also avoid too narrow pieces near the walls.

As noted above, only a rectangular tile is suitable for such a pattern. Try to choose the width of porcelain stoneware from the area of your room. Use only quality materials. Try not to use tiles of monophonic glossy colors, such as ordinary tiles or marble, for installation in this way, the picture is ugly and greatly distorts the space.

Important! Going to the store is to correctly calculate the right amount of tiles. If you chose a herringbone pattern for your room, then note that you will need to take 10% more material to fit.

The entire installation process consists of three large steps:

  1. Pre-marking the floor, deriving calculations and correcting errors;
  2. Laying the tile itself;
  3. Grouting joints.

Floor marking

Marking must be carried out from the center of the room. Find the center and draw a line across the room. Next, we calculate at what distance from each other the tile should lie. To do this, divide its length by 1.414 in length. The last number is a generally accepted constant. It allows you to find out at what distance the next piece will lie. The resulting number is the same distance. Then we retreat as many centimeters as it turned out and draw a second line. The material on the other hand will lie at a slightly greater distance, because diagonal seams are slightly wider. With this layout, it is first necessary to pay attention to how the fragment lies in the corner of the room. If there is a need for narrow trimming, then move the material to the wall to avoid this problem.

Laying tiles

First evaluate the work surface. Are there dust and dirt? Is the surface well primed? Are there any cracks in the screed and is there a level surface for laying? Only then can material be laid. Apply glue, depending on the marked marking, to the base, then remove it with a spatula almost completely. With a notched trowel, apply glue to the tile itself and remove excess. Install the tile in the desired area. Thus, it is necessary to put 3 fragments. Then go to the adjacent lane. All installation of porcelain tiles takes place in rows. Do not forget to insert crosses so that the distance between the seams is the same.

Grouting

In order to wipe the seams on the floor, you must use a rubber grater, instead of a spatula. It is most convenient to overwrite large areas. Spread the mixture over the grater and grind the seams. As soon as the grout is set, clean the stains with a damp cloth.

Advice! For the floor, it is best not to use light shades of grout, firstly, they look very contrasted. Secondly, they quickly overwrite and become dirty. It is best to choose a grout in the color of the material.

So, as you can see, laying the material in this way is not a very complicated process, you just need to understand the details and try it in practice.
