How to glue linoleum on linoleum

Linoleum flooring has a strong structure, but eventually wears out anyway. As a rule, their service life is decades, but it may happen that it can break under certain loads or just quickly lose its quality appearance, due to poor care of it. In this case, you have to lay a new floor covering. However, this is the beauty of linoleum coatings, because they can be laid directly on top of each other without spending their time on dismantling the old floor.

Is it possible to glue linoleum on linoleum

As a rule, if the flooring needs to be replaced, then people do not bother with removing and cleaning the old. On the one hand, this is correct - saving time and effort. In addition, several layers of material will significantly insulate the floor, which will make the house more comfortable and warmer. However, here there may be pitfalls.

The main disadvantage of this method is the possible destruction of the floor. This is true for old houses or for those who have moved to a new private house and do not know what condition it is in now. Of course, if the house is not quite old, it would be more reasonable to lay the old coating on top of the new one - it is easier, softer and warmer.

Therefore, even if a person decided not to dismantle the old layer, it is necessary to at least bend several separate sections of the coating to check in what condition the floor is. If this is not done, then a person can lose not only extra time, but also his money. After all, with a rotting wooden floor, the structure of linoleum also collapses faster. In addition, when opening the floor, the old coating will no longer be repackable.

It is also important to understand that if the old coating has many holes, large cracks or bulges, then it is better to dismantle it. After all, these listed signs make it clear that under the coating is mold, fungus, or other harmful microorganisms. If you can’t get rid of this initially, then the new linoleum will become the same as soon as possible, no matter how well looked after.

Answering the question: "Is it possible to lay a new coating on the old?" - that should be answered - it is necessary! However, observing several important conditions:

  • good condition of the floor;
  • the absence of serious damage to linoleum;
  • lack of fungus, mold and other contaminants under the coating;
  • the degree of load that will be covered;

What is required for this

In order to fix the layers of linoleum, mainly two gluing methods are used:

  • Hot welding.
  • Cold welding.

Important! The need to use these methods is that they are intended directly to strengthen the layers and joints of the coating. After all, with poor strengthening of these areas, linoleum will bully greatly, after which it will completely peel off the floor. Such a problem not only worsens the appearance of the interior, but also creates a serious danger to the residents of this house. After all, there is a high risk of tripping over these bends and getting an accidental injury.

Hot welding is the fastening of layers using special commercial equipment. As you might guess, it acts on the principle of hot welding of layers of material. Such a connection is the most reliable and durable. However, all these advantages result in one drawback - such a solution is the most expensive.

Cold welding, in turn, occurs on the principle of cold welding. This method is the most common. In order to apply it, it is necessary to purchase special tubes of the same substance, which in appearance look very much like standard glue. It is available in two forms:

  • Class A glue - used for new coatings.
  • Class C glue - used for old coatings.

Class "A" has a more liquid state of the structure, and is applied immediately after bonding the layers of the new coating with tape. This is necessary so that the material does not move on the surface, and does not interfere with uneven bonding. After marking and full preparation, the adhesive tape is cut with a smooth and thin strip in the center, but taking into account that the edges are well fixed. The consistency of cold glue is poured inside this section, which performs its main task. After finishing work, you must wait 5 minutes and completely remove the adhesive tape - under it there will be a neat and inconspicuous seam.

Important! Many "craftsmen" who do not want to spend money on the purchase of cold glue, simply fasten the layers of materials using ordinary nails and elements similar in principle. Firstly, it does not aesthetically and greatly spoil the appearance, and secondly, it also significantly complicates the process of the next dismantling of coatings in the future. In addition, there is a high risk of damage to the coating and render it unusable.

Important points and recommendations

Laying linoleum requires a responsible and careful approach, and no less important - good knowledge. Indeed, not only the appearance of the coating, but also its service life depends on the quality of work.

The first and important tip concerns the use of cold welding. It is necessary to use it only if the premises will not require any repairs for a long time. This is due to the fact that during the cold welding of materials, the dismantling of the floor covering will be very complicated. As a rule, special equipment is used to remove multilayer linoleum, which costs considerable resources. Therefore, before deciding to use cold glue, you must additionally make sure that you will not have to repair the floor for many more years.

The second tip flows smoothly from the first. Many do not want to prepare the base of the floor in advance, so they simply use ordinary skirting boards to fix linoleum. However, this solution leads to the risk of bloating and the formation of uneven surfaces. It will be quite difficult to fix this problem. In addition, if the interior of the house provides for cumbersome and heavy furniture - in 40% of cases this ends with a torn coating.

The third tip relates directly to the bonding itself. It is important to know that poor-quality material compounds may not be immediately noticeable, but it will manifest itself as soon as possible. Specifically, with high humidity or strong temperature extremes. Under such conditions, the product simply shrinks or lends itself to stretching. To avoid this, it is necessary to carefully and evenly glue the joints and edges of the elements of the joints.

How to glue linoleum on linoleum: step by step

The whole process is carried out in several stages:

  • preparatory;
  • material cutting;
  • gluing layers;
  • sealing joints;

First of all, you need to make sure that the floor is in good condition and fully complies with the requirements. After that, preparatory work begins: removal of furniture, removal of baseboards, surface cleaning, preparation of tools.

After everything is ready, the required web size is measured and further cut. When all the necessary parts are put in place, they are glued together with masking tape.

The adhesive tape is carefully cut in the center, a special adhesive is poured there. Having done this work in all areas where you need to stick, the tape is removed.

The final stage is re-sealing of the seams. It is applied according to the same principle as the previous step.
