Which TV contrast is better

Going to the store in search of a new TV, it will be useful to know in advance what characteristics you need to pay attention to when choosing it. What is most important for the consumer? Good picture. Its quality is directly related to contrast. This is an important parameter of the television image. To choose the best option from the presented variety, it is important to understand for yourself what contrast is.

What is the contrast of the TV, its types

As such, units to measure this characteristic were not invented. It is expressed in relation to the lightest point (white) to the darkest (black). That is, this value shows how many times the brightest point on the on screen is brighter, the most darkened. An indicator of 1500: 1 indicates to customers that this TV model displays white and a half thousand times brighter than black.

By eye in the store you are unlikely to determine the level of contrast, its exact parameters can be seen in the instrument passport or check with the seller. To test the screen contrast, special high-precision devices are used, but keep in mind that for inexpensive fakes of TV models this characteristic may not be tested, and it is indicated arbitrarily.

REFERENCE! Contrast ratios above 30,000: 1 are not perceived by the human eye, so it makes no sense to buy an expensive model with such an indicator in pursuit of image quality.

There are 2 types of contrast:

  1. Natural (or static). It is measured at a particular moment, as if you clicked a freeze frame and compared the brightest and darkest colors in the same picture of the display.
  2. Dynamic (DC). Measured in motion. During the screening of the film, the television independently regulates the light flux, reflecting dark and light points, focusing on the features of changing images on the screen. Smart modern TVs analyze the plot and adjust to it, increasing or decreasing the brightness of the backlight at the right time. When a sunny day is shown, the luminous flux dims, and when a night landscape is shown, on the contrary, it grows.

Which TV contrast is better

The control of the backlight in modern LCDs allows you to increase DC, but not as noticeably as stated in the advertising of TVs. In terms of image quality, such TVs outperform simple models where there is no such function.

But still, screens with high static contrast are valued higher for picture quality. For comparison, the picture is presented - white letters on a black background, with a high level of natural contrast, the letters and background of those colors that should be in real life, that is, white and black. And on displays that have high dynamic performance, the letters will turn gray. From this it follows that video recording on a television with a high static contrast ratio will more accurately transmit an image with a minimum of half tones. You can appreciate all the advantages of the natural contrast of colors by watching a movie in a movie theater.

The closest to a real world vision in contrast at the time was the image of picture tubes of old tube TVs. In the modern world, the palm in the natural transfer of the relationship between white and black was divided among themselves:

  1. The leader is JVC (D-ILA technology).
  2. Devices brand SONY (technology SXRD).
  3. New generation televisions with plasma screens.

In recent years, LCD TVs have been using local dimming LED backlighting. This gives good results in increasing the contrast ratio of screens. Due to the high costs, the backlighting is not complete, but lateral, but this is enough. LED monitors also have a matrix backlight, which significantly increases contrast. Therefore, the picture of plasma panels is much brighter and richer than that of LCD counterparts.

What do the indicators 1200, 3000, 5000 mean?

1200 - low contrast, such as usually have low-end TV models. This means that the darkest area of the image on the screen will be 1200 times different in brightness from the brightest place. Indicators 3000 and 5000 reflect the same. But LCD screens with such contrast ratios show a better picture than the first model.

REFERENCE! Indicator 5000 and higher have a TV with an average price. For expensive models, indicators start at 20,000: 1 and higher. But keep in mind that unrealistically high rates are an advertising move.

A clear answer to the question: "Which contrast is better?" not. The perception of the image depends on the settings and the conditions in which you are going to watch your new TV. Therefore, first of all, configure the device for yourself - factory settings are not suitable for everyone.

Keep in mind that depending on what time of day you like to watch TV, you can choose different levels of backlight. For housewives involved in watching TV shows and shows during the day, an LCD screen with zone lighting is enough. But a lover of gothic horror films at night will need a screen with high contrast to clearly transmit dark landscapes.
