How to remove a crosspiece from an office chair

An office chair is an integral part of any office. It is also used as a home furniture item. They must have a stable design, be lightweight and comfortable. For ease of use, all seats are equipped with a lifting mechanism. It rests on a cross. Since the last load is the greatest load, it is subject to wear and as a result can fail. To replace it, you can contact the workshop, or you can do it at home.

Externally, this detail of any chair looks pretty straightforward. However, it is she who provides the proper stability on wheels and assumes the greatest load. Crossings are of three types:

  • Wooden. This is the most expensive version of this part and is installed, as a rule, on fairly expensive models of seats. In addition to aesthetic appearance, it has excellent wear resistance and is able to withstand loads of up to 130 kg;
  • Chrome plated. It gives the chair a respectable look and is considered the most durable. If it is properly looked after, it can last for more than a dozen years. It is able to withstand fairly high loads and is designed for weight up to 130 kg;
  • Plastic spider. It is the most inexpensive option and is installed on an economy class model. Despite this, the quality of the materials used is quite high. In the manufacture of such a crosspiece, polymer synthetic compounds are used, so the crosspiece is quite wear-resistant. It is designed for a weight of up to 100 kg;

Crosses also differ in their diameter, which can range from 400 to 700 mm. Crosses of small diameter are placed on children's models. On the seats of managers and cameramen installed crosses with a diameter of 700 mm.

Despite the fact that crosses are made taking into account possible loads, they often fail. To repair the cross, you must first dismantle it from the chair.

The failure of this part of the chair is often due to careless use of this piece of furniture. For example, if the owner sharply sat on it, as if falling with all his weight. Plastic parts are more prone to breakage. However, the rest are not safe from this. As a rule, plastic parts fail at their joints.

IMPORTANT! In no case should you try to repair a failed cross with adhesives or a soldering iron. Due to the heavy loads on the foot of the part, the glue will not help in solving the problem. The crosspiece must be replaced completely.

To replace a broken crosspiece with a new one, it must first be dismantled. To do this, you need the following tools:

  • Crosshead screwdriver;
  • Hammer or mallet;
  • Flat screwdriver;
  • hex keys;

A special fluid is also needed to separate the plastic parts. If this is not at hand, you can take kerosene, soapy water or vinegar essence. It is necessary to fill in the solution and leave it for about 10 minutes for it to work.

After all the tools are prepared, you can proceed with the dismantling procedure.

On the surface on which the analysis will be made, it is necessary to lay newspapers or any other absorbent tissue.

REFERENCE! The gas cartridge of the chair is connected to the cross. Inside it is a lubricant that can leak during parsing.

  • The chair needs to be turned upside down so that the central part of the crosspiece has a good view and is easily accessible. It is necessary to give the chair proper stability so that it does not swing during parsing;
  • Next, remove the gas cartridge. To perform this operation, you must first remove the seat. To do this is quite simple - you need to unscrew the 4 bolts that secure it to the piastre. Piastra is a part that connects the seat and gas lift and is responsible for adjusting the height;
  • With a mallet or hammer, it is necessary to knock down the piastra from the gas lift;
  • After that, you need to remove the lock washer at the bottom of the cross and remove the gas lift rod from the casing;

NOTE! You need to act carefully, as there are a bearing and an oil seal inside the casing.

  • Neat taps of the hammer crosses off the gas lift;
  • Then you need to collect the gas lift in its original state;
  • The wheels also need to be removed. The rollers are not fixed in any way and can be removed if you make some effort;

You need to perform each step carefully, since most of the parts are made of plastic, so it is quite easy to damage them.

With all the necessary materials and minimal experience, the whole procedure takes from ten minutes to half an hour.

In order for a computer or office chair to last as long as possible without causing breakdowns, you must take care of it and follow certain rules.

  • About once every half a year, you need to inspect all furniture details, check the tightness of the joints and whether all the nuts and bolts are tightened tightly;
  • The fabric parts must be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner. If there are spots, you can use various stain removers;
  • If the upholstery is made of leather, it must be wiped with a damp cloth soaked in a special solution;
  • It is worth considering the maximum load of the chair used;
  • No need to abruptly sit on the seat, in order to avoid damage to the cross or gas lift;

If you follow the necessary recommendations, the office chair can last for many years.
