Which coffee grinder is better than a millstone or a knife

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee is an integral component of a successful start to the day. However, to obtain the highest quality drink, special attention should be paid not only to the stage of its direct preparation, but also to preparatory procedures, including the proper grinding of coffee beans. An indispensable assistant in solving this problem is a coffee grinder, however, the variety of devices in household appliances stores often makes it difficult for the consumer to choose.

The modern electric coffee grinders on the market are mainly divided into two categories:

  1. Knife (rotary). They are a device with a plastic or metal case, in the lower part of which there is a motor, and in the top - a coffee tank, which is closed with a tight lid. Grinding of coffee beans in a coffee grinder of this type is carried out by means of rapidly rotating stainless steel knives, mounted on a metal rod.
  2. Millstones. Models of this type grind coffee beans using screw disks made of stainless steel, cast iron or ceramics. The device consists of a compartment with a motor and millstones, as well as two containers, one of which is loaded with coffee beans, and the already crushed product is poured into the other. The tank for grains in mill models is usually quite large and can hold up to 300 g of grains. The power of the device can vary from 100 to 1000 watts, however, the optimal indicator is within 300 watts.

The popularity of rotary coffee grinders is primarily due to the low cost of these devices in the household appliance market. Also, consumers are attracted by the compactness of the device and ease of operation.

In devices of this type there is no way to control the degree of grinding of the product. The grinding of coffee beans in a rotary coffee grinder depends on the rotation time of the knives: the longer the appliance is turned on, the finer the degree of grinding. However, it should be borne in mind that a knife coffee grinder will not allow to obtain a uniformly ground product.

IMPORTANT!After 20-30 seconds of continuous operation, the knives of the rotary coffee grinder begin to overheat, which leads to carbonization of the grains and can cause a bitter aftertaste in the finished drink.

The main advantage of a millstone grinder over a rotary type device is the uniformity of the finished product and the ability to set the desired degree of grinding, thanks to the adjustable distance between the millstones.

IMPORTANT!The coffee ground in the millstone device is suitable for brewing in any coffee makers and coffee machines.

The hermetically sealed lid on the grain container allows you to store unused product in the device for a rather long time, ensuring reliable preservation of the aroma and taste of the raw material.

The low level of noise produced by auger millstones is also an absolute advantage of the device, especially if family members wake up and have breakfast at the same time.

Mill-type models are often equipped with a number of additional functions:

  • lock on when the cover is open;
  • automatic cord winding;
  • increased sound insulation;
  • timer for calculating the grinding time;
  • automatic shutdown function protecting the device from overheating;
  • a device for measuring the required number of grains for a given pure cups of the finished drink.

In addition, mill electric grinders are considered safer due to the fact that the cutting unit is hidden inside the device and is not available for direct contact. This parameter is most important for families with small children.

The disadvantages of this type of model include a high cost compared to knife options. Also a drawback of millstone devices is quite impressive dimensions, therefore, acquiring this type of equipment, you will have to allocate it a separate place in the kitchen.

Ultimately, the choice of coffee grinder is determined by the needs and preferences of each specific consumer. However, despite the high cost, millstone grinders are a more versatile option. Due to the uniformity of grinding, coffee beans ground in a mill electric coffee grinder are suitable for the subsequent preparation of an invigorating drink in any way: in a Turk, a coffee maker and a coffee machine. It should also be borne in mind that the quality of grinding plays a key role in the preparation of certain types of coffee: espresso, cappuccino, mocha. Therefore, true connoisseurs of these drinks are recommended to opt for a mill version of an electric grinder.
