How to set up a thermostat on a heating boiler

What is the temperature controller for?

All types of heating equipment can work in the active mode of heating the coolant with firewood, gas or electricity, depending on the type of boiler. In addition to this mode, modern units switch to a passive state, in which the coolant continues to circulate in the system, but does not heat up anymore. Accordingly, the heating process of the required room is slowed down.

Switching from one state to another is performed using a temperature controller. It is this device that gives the command to the heating equipment to work in active or passive mode.

Types of temperature regulators

Manufacturers of thermal equipment produce a wide variety of models of devices for adjusting room temperature. Depending on the type of heating boiler, the regulators are divided according to their purpose:

  • for solid fuel;
  • gas;
  • electrical.

According to the type of device control, they are classified as follows:

  • mechanical;
  • electromechanical;
  • electronic.

An example of a mechanical regulator is the attribute of a solid fuel boiler for changing the parameters of the coolant. After turning the adjusting wheel manually, the angle of opening and closing of the blower with the help of a chain drive of the device will change.

Electromechanical regulators are often used on domestic heaters and convectors. Turning the control wheel instructs the appliance to turn it on or off, depending on the air temperature. The same principle is used for the operation of different types of boilers.

Electronic controllers allow you to set the required on and off parameters with high accuracy, using buttons that adjust the value of the set value. Modern temperature controllers are additionally equipped with weekly programmers, thanks to which they set various modes for heating day or night, as well as when leaving the house for a weekend or longer.

The ease of use and adjustment of electronic and electromechanical temperature controllers contributes to the increased demand for these devices. Mechanical require a more painstaking approach to installation and configuration, but, the operation process does not differ from electromechanical attributes.

According to the method of measuring temperature, thermostats for boilers distinguish:

  • on the heat carrier;
  • by air.

This difference indicates what kind of temperature we are adjusting by changing the parameters of the device. Modern models of heating equipment are equipped with built-in temperature controllers for the coolant, and convectors - in the air.

How to connect and configure the thermostat

Installation of electronic and electromechanical devices requires breaking the electric circuit to start the heating boiler. It is to the switching contacts of the heating equipment that a regulator is connected, which will give commands when applying voltage to the power supply network of the heating equipment. When connecting electric boilers that require high current to perform heating, use an electromagnetic or similar starter so as not to pass high voltage through the regulator.

Wiring diagrams of electrical appliances are observed in accordance with the recommendations of the manufacturers of this or that equipment. Unlike a mechanical temperature regulator, electrical attributes do not require calibration and adjustment of regulatory elements. The adjustment of the electromechanical regulator is made by turning the wheel to the desired value of the temperature of the air or coolant. Upon reaching the set value, the sensor that is included in the package of the device will disconnect the contact of the boiler electric network. After a temperature drop of 2-10 degrees. (depending on model), the circuit closes and an electric current turns on the heating unit.

Electronic regulators allow you to independently set the temperature for switching the boiler off and on. To do this, using the control buttons, set the desired shutdown parameters of the heating equipment, then press the upper button to adjust the values ​​and do not release until the selected value flashes. After that, the inclusion temperature is selected and the bottom button is held until the desired value is fixed. Lightly pressing the upper, then lower buttons, check the set values. Now, when voltage is applied, the controller will periodically turn the equipment on or off, as soon as the set temperature values ​​are reached.

IMPORTANT! When installing an additional temperature controller with a sensor through the air, the connection of the contact terminals is made in parallel with the existing controller of the heating unit!

A mechanical temperature regulator, which is installed on a solid fuel boiler to change the temperature of the coolant, requires more attention during installation. The peculiarity of the adjustment is that after its installation in a regular place, the temperature on the controller will not correspond to the coolant in 90% of cases. To adjust the set value, use a chain that connects the regulator lever to the lower shutter of the boiler.

In order to adjust the operation of the mechanical regulator, the equipment is started up at an arbitrarily set position of the lever with an open blower of the boiler. When the temperature at the outlet of the heating unit reaches 60 degrees, the chain is pulled, leaving the lower flap open by 2.5-3 mm. After that, turn the control lever to the 80 mark and wait for the temperature of the coolant to increase. When a stable combustion process is achieved, the temperature difference is compared. If the regulator is less important than the boiler, then the circuit is lengthened, but if on the contrary, it is shortened. After that, the thermostat is checked at a lower temperature, if necessary, corrected in exactly the same way.

ATTENTION! It is impossible to achieve a clear correspondence of temperature indicators on the controller and the boiler exit due to differences in measurement error! The difference in readings at different operating modes reaches 5 degrees!

Connecting a thermostat in a living room will allow you to use the capabilities of heating equipment with greater efficiency. In addition to reducing costs for the consumption of various raw materials, electrical appliances installed on solid fuel boilers, can increase efficiency, due to a more rational use of firewood or coal.
