Electric kettle leaking: what to do

The kettle, like all household appliances, sooner or later fails, breaks. Causes and consequences are unpredictable. However, depending on certain signs of damage, the device can still be tried to be repaired on its own.

What to do if an electric kettle leaks?

In most cases, you can repair yourself if the kettle leaks. However, ignorant people in electronics need to contact specialists to get a quality repair of the kettle.

Clarification of the cause

Before making a decision, it is first necessary to determine the cause of the breakdown and its nature. The signs of damage and their brief description will be described below:

  1. Crack on the water level scale. Typically, the water level is made from plastic, which may crack over time due to dryness.
  2. Damaged housing. Violation of the integrity of the body occurs with various mechanical influences. For example, when filling the kettle with cold water immediately after draining hot it can provoke microcracks in especially weak places.
  3. Weak mounting of the heating element.
  4. Corrosion of the bottom. In this case, a gap may form at the junction of the bottom with the body.

DIY repair

Now about what can be done with each failure considered. Manual repair of the electric kettle is possible in the following cases.

Crack on the indicator:

  1. Replacing the measured glass itself will not work, but you can try to seal the crack tightly with tape or tape, which will significantly reduce water loss.
  2. If the level of your kettle is a pipe, then you just need to stop the water from entering it.
  3. You can also try to seal the cracks with hot glue. It is enough to apply a layer of glue on the crack of the casing or indicator using a special gun. Before checking the kettle for serviceability, wait until the substance has completely dried.
  4. A cheaper option is cold welding. Similarly to the previous example, apply welding to a damaged surface and let it brew. Then pour cold water into the kettle and check the tightness of the device.

REFERENCE! This method of solving the problem is effective for microcracks of the water indicator. In other cases, specialist assistance or instrument replacement may be required.

If the case is damaged:

As in the previous example, if the crack is insignificant, then you can try to fix the place of damage with hot-melt adhesive or cold welding.

Weak mounting of the heating element:

If the lower part of the teapot “hangs”, then the problem is solved by simple screw tightening. Next, place the kettle on a napkin, paper or any other wet material. After some time, the result will be visible.

If a wet spot still forms on paper or fabric, then only replacing the O-ring will help. Below you will find step-by-step instructions on how to do this:

  1. Remove the bottom of the kettle. Here an instruction with a detailed description of the instrument configuration can help.
  2. Get a disk with a lining.
  3. Remove the gasket from the disk.

Inspect the disc, case, and silicone gasket for signs of malfunction. There may be two situations:

  1. If the case is damaged in place of the disc, the kettle must be disposed of.
  2. If only the gasket is damaged, then it should be replaced.

If serious damage was not found, then, perhaps, the point is in weakening the connection of the disk with the case. It is recommended that the parts be descaled and put back in their original place.

It remains to verify the result.

In which cases repair is not possible

It so happens that neither the proposed methods nor the master are able to restore the electric kettle. In this case, the device must be disposed of and replaced with a new one. The list of damage in which the repair is powerless:

  1. Corrosion of the bottom. Rusted metal is a sign that the integrity of its surface was violated, which provoked the oxidation of the bottom as a whole.
  2. Serious damage to the case. A broken cover or a significant part of the housing cannot be repaired.
  3. Burnt wiring. If during a short circuit inside the kettle the wires burned out and at the same time melted part of the case and damaged other parts of the kettle, then such a device can be changed immediately.

An electric kettle, like any household appliance, requires compliance with operating rules. This will increase the life of the device and reduce the cost of repairing or replacing it.
