How different types of coffee makers work

According to statistics, up to 70% of our compatriots start their day with a cup of aromatic coffee. Moreover, almost half of them use coffee machines to prepare this invigorating drink. However, even the most avid coffee lovers do not always know that there are several varieties of coffee makers, each of which has its own characteristics. And we will talk about them in this material.

How the coffee maker works (general principles)

To make coffee manually, you must first roast and grind the beans. The use of coffee machines allows you to skip these steps. To understand the device of the coffee machine, let's look at how it brews a drink:

  • The device heats the liquid to 90 ° C.
  • For preparation, ground coffee is used or in special capsules. Due to their own tightness, the capsules are able to maintain taste for a long period of time.
  • Inside the device, all these components are combined, eventually turning into a delicious drink that almost everyone likes.

Schemes of almost all coffee machines are identical. They consist of:

  • flasks for cooking;
  • a filter;
  • valve that controls the pressure in the machine;
  • equipped with a lid of the tank;
  • heating part.

Coffee makers are divided into the following varieties:

  • geyser;
  • carob;
  • drip.

How a geyser coffee machine works

Geyser-type coffee makers differ in small dimensions. Outwardly, they resemble small porcelain coffee pots. When cooking, the liquid does not leak from the appliance, however, you still need to look after it.

Allocate electric models and not electric. The latter can be installed on a standard stove: gas or electric. Water flows from the bottom up and pours ground coffee. Then the finished drink is poured into a special cone.

Such coffee makers consist of a pair of containers connected to each other like an hourglass. The principle of operation, as is already clear from the name, is that of a geyser. In the central narrowest part there is a special one for coffee (a cup such as a sieve). When boiling water in the lower tank, it rises under pressure through a tube upwards, through a layer of ground coffee, brewing it. As a result, an aromatic product, ready to use, enters the upper tank, the strength of which depends on the amount of dry coffee.

How does a drip coffee maker work?

It has the simplest principle of action and affordable cost. Boiling, water from the tank enters the tube, from where it fills a filter with ground coffee drop by drop, and from there it also drops into a flask - usually a glass one - drop by drop. In these models, when creating a drink, boiling water and steam pressure are not used.

Filters come in three types:

  • Disposable paper. The simplest to use and hygienic. They do not need to be washed - they are removed along with coffee grounds after the end of preparation. Minus - these filters must be regularly purchased.
  • Nylon Designed for approximately 60 uses, however, in reality, one filter is enough for a maximum of 65 cups of drink. Generally available with coffee makers.
  • Gold. They are nylon filters coated with titanium nitrate, which gives the product durability. Wash easily, but are not cheap.

Attention! A great alternative to all the above types of filters are metal models that do not need to be changed at all. However, they are usually quite expensive.

How does a carob coffee maker work?

Carob coffee makers are the most popular. They are easy to operate, affordable, and cooking in them lasts no more than 3-4 minutes. This is the best choice for espresso lovers.

This device is sometimes called an espresso machine. In such devices, the same principle of operation is used as in other models. Water is contained in a special vessel, where it, boiling, turns into steam.

The preparation of the drink is due to the fact that the steam rises under the influence of pressure of 4-15 bar, forcing the liquid to rapidly pass through the coffee layer under the influence of pressure. Aromatic oils and all kinds of substances stand out from the coffee layer, which gives the final product optimal density, excellent aroma and excellent taste. After cooking, the product is poured into cups.

To obtain a delicious espresso, it is necessary that the pressure level in the pump of the apparatus is at least 15 bar, and in the horn - 9 bar.

These operating parameters can provide only models with a power of at least 1000 W to a maximum of 1700 W. Devices with less power will not be able to give the optimal level of pressure - such devices by their principle of operation are more reminiscent of geyser ones.

Coffee is poured into a special horn, after which it is carefully packed. Thanks to the device, these models were called carob models.

Based on the pressure level, carob coffee makers are divided into two types:

  • Up to 15 bar, in which the drink is prepared in a matter of minutes and it turns out extremely gentle and soft.
  • Up to 4 bar, where coffee is made slowly, but it turns saturated.

The horn where ground coffee is loaded is made of metal or plastic. The best choice is devices with metal horns, in which the coffee warms up much better and gives the drink its own aroma and taste more fully.

In horns made of plastic, the heating is of poor quality, as a result of which the final product is less tasty. Conventional models intended for home use are equipped with one horn, which implies the preparation of a couple of cups of coffee drink at the same time. For an office or a large family, a car with a pair of horns is relevant.

Important! In carob devices, the liquid is heated to 87-95 ° C. At a higher temperature, it will boil, and the drink will be spoiled.
