How to change the bearing on the washing machine

Various devices, units are designed to save our time and energy. A modern person will not go to wash on the river and rub his things with crushed brick.

Almost every house has a washing machine, you can select the desired mode, after a while take out things already clean. But in such an assembly there are moving parts. The drum can rotate at high speed. Together with the rest of the design, it is connected by a bearing. But as a result of several years of operation, bearing parts may wear out.

During operation, the bearing takes over the load, due to which the rolling and rotation take place. It is part of the support of the entire structure, therefore it is subject to wear. And if the machine began to emit a strong knock during operation, it vibrates excessively, it is quite possible that the bearing has worn out.

You can replace a worn part yourself or by contacting a workshop. The article will discuss how to detect this malfunction, disassemble the machine, change the bearing and reassemble the mechanism.

Bearing in the washing machine:

  • Provides rotation of the drum.
  • Allows you to reduce vibration and noise during the operation of the washer.
  • Reduces the friction force, therefore, saves electricity.

Bearing Description

One of the main parts in the washing machine is the bearing assembly. It serves to transmit torque from the pulley to the drum.

Typically, this element is mounted on a cross, but depending on the manufacturer, there may be differences in design. The location of the cross is on the back wall or inside the tank.

Bearings come in two types - plastic and metal. Economy models are equipped with metal. The bearings, which are called plastic, actually have a metal case inside, and a protective plastic casing on top. Plastic protects metal parts from corrosion and increases their service life.

Most often, two bearings are used, internal and external, having different sizes. The bearing located near the drum takes up a large load. There are also models of machines where the block with bearings is a double row bearing, otherwise referred to as mono-bearing.

What functions does

It performs the function of a link between the drum in which the laundry to be washed is located and the pulley that drives this same drum.

Reasons for Failure

First of all, a rubber seal is damaged, which is a sealing material that protects metal parts.

If this element breaks down, water begins to penetrate into the mechanism. Penetrating water washes and dissolves the grease. Due to physical processes, under the influence of friction, the bearing wears out.

Usually this happens no earlier than 5-7 years after the start of operation. There may be several reasons for premature wear of the bearing mechanism:

  • Factory defect - a defect in the bearing itself or the seat under the gland.
  • The machine is systematically overloaded with linen, permissible weight standards are exceeded.
  • Operation of defective equipment.

Tips for operating the washing machine so that the bearings do not fail.

First of all, pay attention to the quality of water in your area. If the water is always of poor quality, plaque forms on water pipes, utensils, and often faucets have to be repaired. In these cases, you must add Calgon or any other softener when washing.

The factory defect of the machine can also lead to wear. If the parts are poorly centered or improperly fitted, backlash and excessive vibration can occur. If during operation you hear extraneous sounds, for example, increased noise or the grinding of metal, you need to inspect it by a specialist or yourself.

Another factor provoking breakdowns is an illiterate installation. Washing machines standing on an uneven surface quickly fail. The instructions always indicate the maximum weight and volume of loaded laundry. To avoid failure of the mechanism parts, do not exceed the indicated numbers.

Where is the bearing in the washing machine

This part, depending on the assembly of the washer, is located in the back wall or the lid of the tank. The bearing is attached to the housing of this element from the outside. In machines with vertical loading, two bearings are mounted on which the drum is mounted.

Varieties of bearings on the washing machine

In addition to the fact that ball bearings can be plastic or metal, they also vary in size. Manufacturers do not have a single standard for the bearings included in the kit. Therefore, machines of the same brand can have bearings with different markings. Typically, one manufacturer has close ball bearings. You can determine the size by finding the description of the technical characteristics of the unit in the instructions. In extreme cases, you can take a worn part to the store to purchase exactly the same new one.

According to the type of design, the bearings are divided into single row and double row. Single row contain one row of rolling bodies. Large loads withstand two-row, consisting of two single-row. But the price of such ball bearings is higher, therefore having one row of rolling bodies is the most common in economy and middle class models.

How to change the bearing on washing machines of different models

Zanussi

When disassembling the case, it should be borne in mind that in Zanussi some of the bolts are hidden behind the plugs. It is necessary to remove the cover and back wall. The top cover is held by two screws bolted to the body. Next, remove the tray for washing powder by pressing on the special latch. After that, unscrew the bolts that secure the dashboard.

Now you can pull the wires out of the sockets. Insert the rubber cuff inside the drum. Next, disconnect the tank from the nozzles. The primary task is to turn off the air pipe. Now you need to remove the drive belt. Then use the hex wrench and pliers to pull out the shock absorber mount.

The next step is to remove the sensor from the tank. Then the ground wire and the wiring going to the heating element are disconnected. Now you can pull out the wires and unscrew the engine. Next, the tube goes to the pressure switch. Using an 8 mm head, it is necessary to remove the filling and drain pipes.

Having hit the center of the drum pulley, carefully unscrew the nut. After, the pulley is pulled out without difficulty. By removing the counterweight and disconnecting the springs, you can remove the tank. The last preparatory stage - you need to disassemble the tank into two halves and pull out the drum. Now you can easily get to the bearings themselves.

Next, remove the bearing according to the instructions:

  • In the cavity of the tank, feel the gland and pry it with a screwdriver.
  • Armed with pliers and a screwdriver, try to pull out the circlip.
  • Grease the bearing.
  • Turn the tank over and start knocking out the bearing using a punch and a hammer. Do not use too much force so as not to break fragile parts.
  • Strip the recess in which the bearing was located.
  • Treat the circlip with waterproof grease, wipe off excess with a cloth.
  • Place a pre-lubricated oil seal on the circlip. Also process the bearing bush.

The above installation method is suitable for Zanussi machines with double row bearings. Therefore, the installation is carried out together with the fastening of the snap ring. In the case of single-row, you have to knock out the outer bearing standing on the side of the sleeve, then remove the stuffing box and only then remove the inner one.

Candy

During the repair, some difficulties may arise, since the side covers of the unit cannot be removed, and the tank can be removed only through the upper hole. As is the case with the equipment of other manufacturers, it is necessary to disassemble the machine and pull out the tank. Some Candy models come with solid oval-shaped tanks that have to be cut at the weld point. If the tank is collapsible, then you can disconnect it according to the standard scheme by unscrewing the bolts and opening the latches. At the end of the work, it remains to assemble the unit in the reverse order. This will help you step by step photos that you took while disassembling the machine.

LG

The dimensions of the bearings of the brand 203-206, they are selected for a specific model. To remove the front wall, you must first remove the cuff, and then unscrew the screws. When pulling out the tank, it is advisable to use an assistant. He will lift the part while you unhook the springs.

Indesit

After removing the powder cuvette and the front panel, remove the rubber cuff. After that, you can unlock the hatch. To dismantle the pulley, it is propped up with a wooden block, which does not allow it to move at the moment of unscrewing the mount. Next, the pulley is torn, trying not to damage the drum.

The tank cap is held by clamps that must be removed. Next, the seals are removed. It is advisable to replace the gasket on which the movable assembly is located. Now you can open the cover and press out the bearings yourself or take the removed part to a service center.

Bosh

The advantage of Bosh machines is collapsible tanks, while many other manufacturers have them welded together. Therefore, self-service should not cause serious difficulties. You can disassemble the unit according to the standard scheme.

Samsung

Owners of cars of this brand can use a ready-made repair kit, including a set of bearings, grease and oil seal. Each such set is designed for a specific model of home helper. The work is carried out according to the same scheme as the replacement of Zanussi ball bearings. But to untwist the case, you will additionally need a Phillips screwdriver, and you will need to remove not the back, but the front wall.

It is important when removing the front wall to remove the cuff so that it does not tear. To do this, first unscrew the screws, then pull out the sensor and loosen the clamp fastener. Only after these operations, you can carefully tighten the cuff.

Whirpool

Most Virpul washers have a collapsible tank that can be opened by unscrewing the bolts. It is pulled out through the front wall. Otherwise, Whirpool washing machines do not have any specific features.

Ariston

In the lineup there are devices with collapsible and non-collapsible tanks. To gain access to the bearing, remove the front wall and top cover. It is recommended to use two types of lubricant - WD-40 against corrosion and waterproof - Litol-24.

Atlant

To remove the bearings, it is necessary to remove the cover, front panel and rear wall. To remove the pulley, you will need to unscrew the central bolt. The belt is removed with it. The gland is installed on the inside of the tank, the bearings can be lubricated before installation.

Ardo

A characteristic feature is the drum shaft with a bronze bushing. It is necessary so that the bearing assembly is hermetically connected. It is important that the sleeve remains clean, then the gland will squeeze it out and not let water in. Most of the models have a frontal device, and the bearings are near the rear wall, which must be removed.

Electrolux

The main feature of these machines is the case, which consists of only two parts. The halves are connected by a seam located in the middle of the side wall. To remove the tank, just remove the back of the housing. The gland in the Electrolux is mounted on top of the bearing.

What you need to replace the bearing on the washing machine

First you need to purchase supplies - a sealing gland, grease and bearings, a set of tools. The minimum set of repair tools is presented in the list:

  • pliers;
  • 8 mm hex wrenches and heads;
  • hammer;
  • mallet;
  • punch;
  • bolt;
  • screwdriver with interchangeable flat nozzles and hexagonal cue bits;
  • grease;
  • adhesive sealant;
  • camera - with it you can shoot every stage of disassembly of the washing machine. It is better not to rely on memory, and then later during the assembly there will be "extra" details.

Before replacing, try lubricating the bearing. Quite often, noise during drum rotation is a result of a lack of lubrication. It will take about two hours to replace the bearing at home. Regardless of the brand of your machine, for repairs you will need to almost completely disassemble the unit. Transfer the washing machine to a spacious room and spread newspapers or old towels under it so that the floor does not get dirty during the repair process.

How to replace bearings in a non-separable drum of a washing machine

In this case, additional tools will be needed: a hacksaw, a wooden hammer, self-tapping screws, a marker. The procedure is as follows:

  • Place the tank on a flat surface and mark the areas under the mounting holes with a marker.
  • Drill 15-20 screw holes, but do not deepen the drill bit too much so as not to damage the drum.
  • Put the tank on the rib and start sawing.
  • When the tank is divided into two halves, you can unscrew the pulley. To do this, just unscrew the nut.
  • Using a hammer, carefully drive out the shaft with two bearings.
  • New components are installed on the old seat. Before mounting, the oil seal must be lubricated. Details are carefully placed inside the cavity by tapping them with a mallet.
  • After that, it is necessary to press in the bearing and oil seal with a special rod and nuts.
  • Now you can connect the halves of the tank, then glue them with sealant and tighten the screws.

Errors when replacing the bearing in the washing machine

When disassembling the case, novice masters often do not pay attention to the condition of the sleeve and the seat socket. Bearing and stuffing box are an inseparable pair, therefore they must be replaced at the same time. It is important to ensure that the sealing element is evenly fixed. The bearing life is also affected by the selection of components up to lubrication. Therefore, it is so important to purchase original parts and follow the manufacturer's recommendations.
