Parquet squealed from the water - what to do?

One of the types of floor coverings that can give a living room a touch of aristocracy is parquet. This is a wood coating. There are several different types of it. From how it is made, we can distinguish: piece, panel and typesetting. But no matter how good this floor is, it has a tendency to bloat.

Parquet squealed - what to do?

Bloating can occur for various reasons, but almost always the main culprit is water. How could she get on the floor? If the liquid did not spill onto the floor, then it could get in a vaporous form. It is necessary to check the state of humidity. This indicator should not exceed a value of 40-60%.

If the humidity is normal, then it penetrates from below. Most likely, the technology of laying the parquet board was violated and a film for waterproofing was not laid under it. Perhaps the neighbors at the bottom of the room have high humidity and it is from there that it penetrates and condenses. There are frequent cases when parquet swells from the flood from the upper residents. During installation, ventilation gaps could not be left, and the parquet itself was laid on top of raw concrete.

What to do if the parquet swollen from the water? First you need to study the place of damage in order to understand the possible causes of swelling.

We examine the place of deformation

Initially, it is necessary to carefully examine the place where the deformation occurred. By the appearance of the damage, it is often possible to determine the causes of bloating, and therefore, to understand how to correct the situation.

If the problem area occupies more than the third part of the room, then there is only one way out - a complete replacement of the cover. This can lead to either a flood or an undeveloped waterproofing. However, local bloating is more common. At the same time, the slats can rise at the joints, and can go a wave along the entire length.

Determine the reason

There are several reasons for local deformation:

  • Expansion joint of insufficient width;
  • If there is local bloating, but no moisture ingress is detected, this indicates a violation of the waterproofing or the floor heating pipe has been damaged.
  • Due to spilled water, old and dry coatings most often swell.

Recovery method

  1. If different quality parquet was used, this is immediately noticeable. Such dies are distinguished by their pattern. If the wood of such parquet is quite high quality, well-dried, then most likely the changes will be practically not noticeable and nothing can be done. But if the swelling is very noticeable, you can polish this area. After this, the joints will need to be treated with putty, as well as varnish. Henceforth, try to keep one level of temperature in the room.
  2. If there are no expansion joints or their width is less than necessary, then the situation can be corrected with a circular saw. You need to walk around the room, along the baseboards, and make gaps.
  3. If a waterproofing film has not been installed. And the coating swelled from the fact that there was a wet mineral screed. Here, complete dismantling is indispensable. It is necessary to open the floors and dry the entire base.
  4. If the slats are swollen from the water and the damage area is small, and the room itself is dry, then you should wait a week. The planks themselves will dry out during this time and snap into place.
  5. If the damage is extensive enough, a complete replacement of the coating is required. Planochki need to be hooked and removed.

It is not recommended to use repeatedly damaged parquet strips. Its geometry is already incorrect and all connections are worthless.

Express - parquet repair

If the parquet is swollen in only one place, what to do in this situation? The simplest method of leveling a slightly swollen parquet is to bring the humidity to its optimum state. Humidity in the room must be reduced to fifty percent. To do this, in the summer they intensively ventilate the room, and in winter they use fan heaters. Locally warm the area of the swelling with a hairdryer, while making sure that the wood does not overheat. The place of swelling is covered with a piece of plywood and a load is placed on it. Periodically, the plywood is removed so that the parquet is ventilated.

Repair with partial dismantling of dies

If the damaged area is small in scale, then there is no need to completely open the floor. Partially replacing the parquet is not difficult.

  1. After the floor dries, you need to remove the damaged area. At the same time, the slats that remained after the initial installation can help out. Worse if the flooring is artistic. Only specialists can handle this.
  2. After removing the deformed parts, you need to inspect how much water got under the parquet. If the waterproofing has delayed it, then dry it. Just do not use a hairdryer so as not to burn the film with hot air.
  3. Wipe condensed moisture on the surface and leave to dry. You can use a heat gun to dry the water more quickly.
  4. Next we remove all the dirt.
  5. After removing the dirt and completely drying, it is possible to make a replacement.
The final stage of work is the grinding of the replaced area and the application of a new coat of varnish.
  6. After the surface is prepared, it is necessary to cover it with varnish. Apply it in two layers. Between applying a layer, let the previous one dry completely.
