The author of the first hair dryer was a hairdresser from St. Louis, Missouri, Alexander Godefroy, a Frenchman by birth. It was he who September 18, 1888 patented a new invention - a hair dryer, which he began to use in his hairdresser.
The brainchild of Godefroy worked due to a gas heater. Pipes departing from the main chimney directing hot air into the dome, which was worn on top of the head of a seated lady. The system allowed not only to dry hair, but also to save a new hairstyle. But Godefroy’s device was too stationary, bulky and inconvenient, and therefore did not receive proper distribution. In 1911, Chicago inventor Gabriel Kazanjyan obtained the first patent for a hand-held hair dryer. In mass production, this device was launched only in the early 20s. In the 30s, some models of vacuum cleaners were sold with a special nozzle in which air was blown, and they could dry their hair. But this miracle of engineering thought did not take root due to the insufficient temperature of the air stream and the inconvenience of the drying process itself. Hair dryers in hairdressing salons still resembled futuristic inventions. They were large and not very convenient, but they coped with their functions.
The developers of hair dryers gave their products different names. Among them were models of Lorelei, Breeze, and others. The term "hair dryer" took root later. In Germany, this word meant a warm and dry wind blowing from the mountains. In 1941, the Foen brand appeared, and so they began to call all household appliances designed for drying.
The inventors of hair dryers worked in three ways. In addition to manual models, which have become more compact over the years, portable hair dryers were invented in a box with a hose. A hood was put on him for the head. Large stationary caps, shaped like helmets, were mounted in hairdressers and were designed for drying and fixing the finished hairstyle. The invention of plastic cases reduced the weight of a home hair dryer, which also played into the hands of users. In the 70s, conditions were developed for the manufacture of safe hair dryers.
