Connectors for monitors

A monitor is a device designed to display information on a screen. Which is transmitted by cable connection through the connection ports (connectors).

What can I connect the monitor to via cable

The monitor is one of the components of a personal computer. When connecting a monitor, it is not recommended to connect the connectors of the old type with new types of interface. Such a connection degrades the transmitted signal. In general, the connection procedure is as follows:

  1. A suitable cable for connection is selected;
  2. In the screen settings, the necessary extension is set.

Reference: To connect different types of connectors, use adapters, as well as converters for transmitting high-quality images.

In cases when a second monitor is connected or connected to a laptop, in addition to the general connection procedure, you need to set the desired mode in the screen settings. The following modes exist:

  1. The main mode. This is when the image is displayed on one of the monitors;
  2. Duplicate screens. The monitor displays the same information;
  3. Multiscreen mode. In this mode, each monitor has independent desktops, i.e. different information may be displayed on the screens.

Also, the monitor can be used as a TV. To do this, you need to connect additional equipment in the form of a TV tuner. Which is a receiver of television signals, as well as providing the ability to view them.

Another way to use a monitor like a TV is to install a decoder. The installation procedure consists in connecting a special board with a built-in video decoder for receiving and transmitting a digital or analog signal.

Reference: The installation of the decoder must be trusted by a specialist.

Cable selection

The quality of the displayed information directly depends not only on the correct connection, but also on the correct cable selection. For the right choice you need:

  1. Select only shielded cables. They allow you to reduce the negative impact on the signal from other electronic devices;
  2. Do not save when choosing a cable. As a rule, the lower the price, the lower the signal quality and speed;
  3. The connectors must have gold-plated contacts. Such contacts reduce the resistance between the cable and the connector, and they are also more resistant to corrosion.

What types are there and what are they for

The main connectors for connection are:

  1. VGA It is a trapezoidal connector that allows you to transmit only a video signal. This type of connector officially has support for images with a resolution of 1280x1024 with a refresh rate of 75 Hz. With greater expansion, image quality may deteriorate. Less and less integrated into video cards. This type of connector has adapters for other types of connectors (HDMI, Display Port, DVI).
  2. DVI It has the ability to transfer only images with a maximum resolution of 1920x1200, but when using the dual-channel transmission mode, 2560x1600 is achieved. It is divided into three types of transmission: analogue (DVI-A), digital (DVI-D), analogue and digital (DVI-D).

reference: All DVI connectors are fully compatible.

  1. HDMI Relate to the modern type of transmission, is considered the most popular. There are three types of connection: micro (Type D), mini (Type C) and full size (Type A). It is capable of transmitting not only a video signal, but also an audio signal to a computer. Supports formats with maximum expansion, as well as images with 3D effects.
  2. Display Port. It was designed as a high-performance interface to replace VGA and DVI. The characteristics are similar to HDMI.
