Pros and cons of carpet

The flooring plays an important role in shaping the finished style of the room, provides a comfortable atmosphere and fills the room with cosiness. That is why it should be chosen with special attention, guided not only by its appearance, but also by its qualitative characteristics.

The carpet consists of a pile, fixed with a special cloth on a single or double layer basis. Today, the market offers a lot of options for carpet: it varies in composition, type of base, manufacturing technology, density and length of the pile and other characteristics.

The main materials for the production of pile are wool, polypropylene, polyamide, polyester, polyacryl, etc. Each material has its own advantages and disadvantages, so the choice should be based on the individual preferences, needs and financial capabilities of the buyer.

So, wool is the most environmentally friendly and fireproof, but it is characterized by a high price and does not differ in durability. Carpets made of polyamide (nylon) are budget and wear-resistant, and also have special softness and elasticity of pile, however, synthetic fibers of the material can have a negative effect on human health and cause allergic reactions.

IMPORTANT: Often you can find flooring that combines several components in one composition. In this case, the main attention should be paid to the proportions of the content of materials.

As a basis, natural or synthetic jute, felt or rubber can be used, which also has a significant impact on the quality characteristics of the coating. The base of rubber is solid, does not undergo deformation and does not slip on the floor, suitable for rooms with high traffic.

Natural and synthetic jute is resistant to high humidity, is particularly strong and durable, suitable even for office rooms. Felt-based carpeting, as a rule, is used to cover parquet boards, characterized by resistance to mechanical stress, as well as improved indicators of softness and comfort.

The main characteristics of the carpet is softness, strength and durability. Before buying, you need to carefully study the quality of the pile: it should be pleasant to the touch, the fibers should fit tightly against each other and not fall out.

The quality and durability of the flooring largely depends on the technology of its manufacture. So, they distinguish carpet:

  1. Woven. The most expensive and most durable type of coating, made on the principle of a real carpet. It is usually made from natural materials, less often a small amount of nylon is added.
  2. Tufted. The manufacturing technology is based on fixing the base with glue, so this type of carpet is particularly rigid and has a wide variety of pile configurations.
  3. Needle Punch. It is made on the principle of boots, without the use of loops. Carpet made using needle-punched technology is characterized by excellent strength and durability, a budget price, and a high level of noise absorption, which is why it is always popular in the design of theaters and office rooms.

IMPORTANT:When purchasing a carpet, you should take into account the features of the room in which it will be located. For rooms with high traffic it is better to give preference to easy-care and durable synthetic materials, and for living rooms, especially bedrooms, it is better to buy a more expensive coating with a soft and hypoallergenic natural pile.

The popularity of this type of flooring is due to a number of its advantages:

  • fixed with a plinth and does not slip on the floor;
  • unlike standard size carpets, carpet sold on rolls can be laid indoors of any size;
  • suitable for use in any room, can be laid on the floor of boards, concrete, parquet, laminate, hardboard and other materials;
  • it keeps heat well in the room, creates a comfortable and cozy atmosphere in it;
  • has good sound insulation;
  • easy to install, does not require special knowledge and skills;
  • does not require special care: carpet cleaning can be carried out using a vacuum cleaner or special means for carpets.

The disadvantages of carpet include the ability to accumulate dust, which creates a favorable atmosphere for the reproduction of bacteria and increases the risk of allergies in households prone to it.
